Macworld In just a few weeks, Apple will unveil the iPhone 16 and Apple Watch Series X, maybe new AirPods and an iPad or two. But a new report claims that won’t be all—a new lineup of Macs might be on the way as well. In his latest Power On newsletter, Mark Gurman reports that Apple is planning a bevy of updates this year to usher in the M4 chip, including the Mac mini, iMac, and MacBook Pro. He notes that the Mac Studio, Mac Pro, and MacBook Air will also get M4 chips, but not until 2025. Last year, Apple held its Scary Fast event in late October to usher in the M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max chips, which were featured in updates to the MacBook Pro. It also updated the iMac at the same event, though none of the new machines received much in the way of upgrades beyond the chip. Additionally, the MacBook Air’s M3 upgrade earlier this year was little more than a spec bump. The Mac mini, Mac Studio, and Mac Pro all still run M2 chips, so this could be the first time all of Apple’s Macs are running the same generation of processors. While the upgrades will likely focus on the new capabilities of the M4 chip and its effect on Apple Intelligence in macOS 15, “at least one Mac model will get more dramatic changes, ” Gurman reports. He doesn’t say which model it is or what the changes will be, but only a couple of Apple’s current Macs make sense. The MacBook Air just got a major new look last year with a new 15-inch model, so it’s highly unlikely another redesign is on the way, and the same goes for the Mac Studio, which has only been on shelves for about two years. The iMac is also unlikely to see a dramatic redesign since it only just got an overhaul in 2021, but Apple could switch up the colors and add a Pro model. And the Mac Pro has had the same design since 2019 despite switching to Apple silicon. But the most likely candidate for a “dramatic change” is the Mac mini. Apple hasn’t changed the design of the Mac mini since 2018, and there have been rumors for years that it has been working on an overhaul of the diminutive desktop. And since all the Mac accessories still have Lightning ports, Apple could take the opportunity to launch a new Magic Mouse, Keyboard, and Trackpad as well.

Macworld While everyone was talking about the arrival of Apple Intelligence in the iOS 18. 1 and macOS 15. 1 betas, Apple also delivered a series of updates for its existing operating systems. And if you own a Mac, you should absolutely install it right away. The updates don’t include any notable new features, but they do fix a lot of security vulnerabilities. In all, the updates include more than 100 security patches for macOS Sonoma (14. 6), Ventura (13. 6. 8), and Monterey (12. 7. 6). When you install them, there will be 54 updates for Sonoma, 36 for Ventura, and 32 for Monterey. That’s an incredible amount of patches, especially considering the last round of updates only arrived in mid-May. Macworld Now the sun’s out you may be wearing your sunglasses and wondering why your iPhone won’t unlock. If you are fed up with having to remove your sunglasses every time you need to unlock your iPhone. Here’s what you can do to speed up the process. The reason why Face ID isn’t unlocking your iPhone is it can’t verify that you are looking at the phone. Face ID normally only unlocks the phone when you are looking at your phone–that way it offers you greater security as someone can’t just hold your phone at your face to unlock it without your authorization, it won’t unlock just sat on your desk beside you, and it can’t be unlocked while you are unconscious or asleep. However, you can set your iPhone to unlock even if it can’t tell you are looking at it. If you do want your phone to unlock without detecting what your eyes are doing here’s what you need to do. How to make Face ID work with sunglasses Thankfully, there’s a simple setting that makes it a lot easier for Face ID to recognize your mug when you’re sporting your favorite shades (although it comes at the expense of sacrificing a bit of security). Here’s how you do it. Go to Settings. Scroll down to Face ID & Passcode. Press it. Enter your passcode. Scroll down to the toggle that says Require attention for Face ID and switch it off. Tap on Ok. That’s all! Face ID should now work when you’re wearing most sunglasses. The benefit is that by turning this requirement off Face ID will speed up in general. Here’s another issue you might have encountered when unlocking your iPhone: How to use Face ID to unlock iPhone while wearing a face mask. We also have a guide to how to fix problems with Face ID. What are the risks of disabling attention? The option above comes with a warning that says, “TrueDepth camera will provide an additional level of security by verifying that you are looking at iPhone before unlocking. Some sunglasses may block attention detection. ” Basically, “attention” means that you’re looking directly at your iPhone with your eyes open. When attention detection is turned off, Face ID will still be “secure” in that your iPhone will only unlock if the TrueDepth sensors are sure that they’re seeing you, but now it also works if your eyes are closed. That means someone could force you to unlock your iPhone by merely lifting it up to your face, even if you shut your eyes. Someone could even unlock your iPhone if you’re asleep. You’ll have to decide if it’s worth the risk. Fortunately, it’s easy to quickly disable Face ID for unlocking your iPhone if you know you’re about to be in a situation where this could be a problem. All you need to do is hold down the side button and either of the volume buttons at the same time for a couple of seconds. With time running short, many details of the iPhone 16 launch may have already leaked into the public realm–such as the new colors that buyers of the new handsets will be able to choose from. It just depends on which sources you choose to believe. Back in May, we covered a report on this subject from the respected analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. From left to right, they are white, black, blue, green, and pink. Exactly the line-up we were expecting based on Kuo’s report. It’s one thing to name a color, of course, and another entirely to picture it. The white, black, and pink finishes are all largely what we’d expect, but the green in particular is a fascinating choice: a rich and lovely oceanic turquoise. The blue meanwhile is surprisingly bright and vivid compared with the dark blue-grey of the iPhone 13, the desaturated mist blue of the iPhone 14, and the ultra-pale, pretty-much-white blue of the iPhone 15. Neither finish matches anything we’ve seen from the iPhone range in recent years. Apple has proved loyal to blue over the years, with variants of this color remaining part of the offering even as yellow, green, and even white come and go. But Apple has yet to settle on what shade of blue it likes best. Bear in mind that, even this close to the launch, the final details of the new iPhones may not be completely settled–and these are dummy models that may merely show potential colors rather than the locked-in finishes we’ll see in September. The evidence is mounting, however, that the late 2024 iPhone line-up will look roughly like this.
